Weaver Elementary Special Program

The Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) at GISD's Weaver Elementary School serves children ages three to five with disabilities including autism Down's Syndrome, speech and communication disorders, physical handicaps, visual impairment, intellectual disabilities, and sensory disorders.

The program provides a field trip to Morgan's Wonderland in San Antonio for these special needs children and their parents. Morgan's Wonderland is the first completely wheelchair-accessible theme park build around the needs of disabled children. With 90 percent of the students at Weaver Elementary being low income, this trip is impossible for most families. Besides Morgan's Wonderland, the three-day trip will include a Riverboat ride at San Antonio's famed Riverwalk and dining at a Mexican restaurant.

Sheila McComas, PPCD teacher at Weaver Elementary, says, "We have found that going out in the community gives our children experiences to encourage their speech and social skills. This is more than just a trip to a special park. It is a once in a lifetime outing where the parents can see their child in an environment in which their child is not the odd man out. This place is magical for our families! Every detail caters to special needs including wheelchair-accessiblie activities, a sensory village, and an ID wristband with locator for those children who might wander off."
